Block in longevity in Lanserhof Sylt, iconic German Wellness

Before there was Michael Pollalan and his “deliberate eating” masterclass before there was “permanent fast” and the Wim Hof method, was Franz Xaver Mayr, the Austrian doctor of the 20th century. His revolutionary method Mayr was based on the belief that the secret of health and beauty begins in the gut. Following his cult led to the opening of his clinic, and, finally, to Lanserhof, a withdrawal of well -being and longevity in the fourth post I currently find myself. Somewhat from my choice.

Arrival on the remote German island of Sylt, regarded by some as the Teutonic version of Hamptons, if the Hamptons had fewer beach clubs and more colonies, requires some effort. That is, of course, the point. Guests have to take a four-hour train trip beyond Causeway Hindenburg from Hamburg to reach the city of the list, where, between the waves and Heather, Lanserhof Sylt seems to levit on the dunes. The whispered structure of the sheet, led (the largest of its kind in Europe) designed by architect Christoph Ingenhoven offers control table, no custom aroma, no chipper guide to ensure your fear of eating only 750 calories a day. That too is the point. In Lanserhof, saving real -world pressures, tuning your senses in your body and your environment, is also part of treatment.

I arrived from depleted New York – existentially tired in a way that no bath or holidays can be resolved. Time made no sense, I was exhausted, unclear, unable to sleep. Ruthless deadlines, continental movements, news cycle … It was enough to throw me into a medium life spiral that, I decided, only a week away, only, could heal. So no, I had not reserved myself in Lanserhof to lose those few winter pounds (as a guest of a gentleman found) or to keep a chronic disease under control (as a sick of “running intestinal syndrome” told me). I was here to sleep without medication and to enroll in the Lanserhof’s longevity program, the one who would keep my body in this mortal spiral as long as possible, at the roof (former). In other words, I was here for what Lanserhof promises at its core: a rigorous, medical scientific reinstatement.

The clinic approach, the treatment of Lanserhof, is rooted in what practitioners call “medicine 3.0” – an evolution of preventive medicine that sees aging itself as a curable condition. This translates to personalized diagnosis, one-to-one consultations and daily calibrated interventions in your genes, cells and metabolism. It also means that a weekly attitude begins with a series of tests (blood panels, body composition scans, an evaluation of the fragility outcome) and meetings with medical directors Jan Strizke and Christina Haggberg, who traveled my data with Clinical Candor. It turns out, my D vitamin was low. My calcium, boundary lines. My attitude? Protective. My hips and shoulders and shoulders were rotating in detail to protect an overloaded psoas muscle – a compensation I would never know if not for the osteopathy of the magician who, in a single session, dropped my lower back and relieved a sustainable pain, I would have endured for two decades.

If the diagnosis and physical therapies were hardcore, the protocols were as much. I received an infusion of something yellow (vitamin D?) During two cell sessions, designed to imitate height training and increase my mitochondrial health. I dared five stints in a Cryo room cooled to -110 ° C, my spirit slowing down as the technician danced along with me outside the glass door for three -minute classics. (“Warp Time” seems to know no linguistic obstacle, and certainly speeds up over 180 seconds, as his title suggests.) My massage therapist insisted that I was too close for a conventional massage. “You need abyanga,” she said. “Something deeper.” No joke.

The deepest was a topic. In Lanserhof Sylt, the body is treated as a system of interdependent parts, not a series of symptoms to manage. You need to go to the cellular level to manifest changes. Nutrition was no exception. I met with the quiet dietician of the clinic, who analyzed not only what I swallow but how. Her Judgment: I was not eating enough, and when I did it, it was contrary. Worse, I was not chewing properly – an insult here of almost spiritual size. Dr Mayr believed that every food bite requires 30 to 40 chewing, and, on the contrary, shame, Dr. Haggberg had to teach me how to chew properly. “Digestion begins in the mouth,” she insisted. Other beads of wisdom: without speaking while eating. There is no water for thirty minutes on either side of a meal. Nothing except after dinner tea, which should end up by 7:30 pm. To ensure that my intestine was cleaned by the end of the week, each day began with a twist of Epsom salts. Thank you the kindness I sat alone, not complaining about my table neighbors at lunch. On the contrary, every meal forced me to reflect on my choices, on the wind, in my relationship with food and people. Rare but elegant food, meals consisted of a clumsy nut yogurt nut nut nut nut nut nut nut nut nut from nut, a small plate of bologne vegan, smoothies presented in small spoons. On the fourth day, my headache and my hunger faded. My reassessed appetite. I started enjoying the food again – not just to consume it. Amazing is amazing what 40 chewing can do.

Not everything had to do with food or fascia. I spent quality time with Heide, a therapist who gently suggested to assign a daily “worrying window” to contain my anxiety to fall asleep. (Good sleep hygiene is essential for longevity.) Her strategy for retraining sleeping required me to lie down and observe my breath for 30 minutes, then get up and read in another room. At first it felt punitive, letting my nerves start and my tired body. But by Wednesday, my brain had learned how to self-excite, how to surrender. Months later, I remain without the ambient.

In addition to jogging on the routine connected in some tubes or sitting in lectures on intestinal health or yoga sessions in the group, there is little to do in Lanserhof Sylt. At least, that was what I entered on this trip thinking. Once my sleep and hunger were adjusted, I made myself available to nature. One day it was marked by a long bike ride to the city. Another included a 10 -kilometer run on board, resisting the request to buy a beer in a cafe. I read three books from the fireplace. (No electronics were allowed!) One night, I drank Kombucha and saw the fried pink and gold sky, while the sun melted through the sea wall, such a quiet introspective scene, it lived a world away from offspring and deadlines. Conversations with my guests – in the pool, on a morning walk, with that fireplace – were deeply personal and diligent. It was easy to forget that most of us had arrived here feeling broken, hoping that “Lanserhof’s cure” would heal us all.

In my last morning, confident in my new “Wellth”, I stratified my coat on my garment, stripped and marched to the North Sea. 2 ° C salted water fracture was immediate. My extremities were defeated, my essence felt hot. For a full minute I fought the request to run. Or to cry. And then, without fanaticism, the pain passed. I came out euphoric, proud and unreasonable for my meaningless, imposed achievement. I can do difficult things! Even sleeps without medication. Even chew a bite of bread written 40 times. Maybe I can even live in health forever.
