After the Teslaâ Model Ys were noticed passing through Austin, Texas Streets on Sunday morning, Ceo Elon Musk posted on his social platform X that Tesla’s “Launch Robotaxi” would start today with a flat fee of 4.20 $.
A witness of Reuters saw some Tesla’s “Robotaxis” on Sunday morning in a well -known area of the Texas capital called South Congress with anyone in the driver’s place, but a person in the passenger seat.
Tesla planned to have front rider knights acting as “security monitors”, though it remained unclear how much control they would have on the vehicles. Teslas driverless videos were also posted on social media, but it was not known if the vehicles held a passenger.
As the scheduled robotax start date approached, Texas lawmakers were moved to approve rules for autonomous vehicles in the state. Texas governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, on Friday signed legislation seeking a state permit to operate self-driving vehicles.
The law does not come into force until September 1, but the Governor’s approval to Friday signals state officials by both parties wanting the driverless vehicle industry to continue carefully. A group of democratic state lawmakers earlier this week asked Tesla to delay her planned robox trial due to legislation.
Tesla did not respond to comment requests. The Governor’s office refused to comment.
The law mitigates the previous state’s attitude against regulation in autonomous vehicles. A Texas law of 2017 specifically banned the cities of self-driving cars.
In recent days, Tesla has sent invitations to a selected group of Internet Impacts Tesla for a small and carefully monitored robotaxi trial, which the company has said it will include 10 or 20 Model vehicles operated in a limited Austin area.
The law requires autonomous vehicle operators to receive approval from the Department of Motor Vehicle in Texas before operating on public roads without a human driver. It also gives state authorities the power to revoke permits if they consider a driverless vehicle “endanger the public”, and requires firms to provide information on how the police and first responses can deal with their driverless vehicles in urgent situations.
Claims of the law to obtain a state permit to operate an “automated motor vehicle” are not particularly large, but require a firm to prove that it may work with the law.
Defines an automated vehicle as at least “Level 4” autonomous-driving skills under a recognized standard, meaning it can drive itself without human drivers under specified conditions, such as within a limited area.
Level 5 autonomy is the high level and means that a car can drive itself anywhere, in any conditions.
Compliance remains much easier than in some countries, especially California, which requires a widespread appearance of vehicle testing data under state supervision.
Departure Tesla Robotaxi, which the company warned may be delayed, comes after more than a decade of Musk’s unfulfilled promises to deliver self-directional teslas.
Most of Tesla’s high heavenly shares are now relying on her ability to offer robotaxis and humanoid robots, according to many industry analysts. Tesla is the most valuable automobile in the world.
Musk has said Tesla would be “super paranoid” for the security of participating in Austin. The company planned to operate only in areas it considered safer.
Austin service will also have other restrictions. Tesla plans to avoid bad weather, difficult intersections and will not hold anyone under the age of 18. Musk has said he is willing to delay the onset for security reasons, if necessary.
The planned departure has generated buzzing among Tesla fans.
“Wow. We will travel to Teslas without driver within just days. On public roads,” posted Omar Qazi, who has 635,200 followers in X, often writes about Tesla using @wholemarsblog’s handle and received an invitation.
Commercialization of autonomous vehicles has been dangerous and expensive. The GM cruise closed after a fatal accident and regulators are looking closely at Tesla and its rivals, the alphabet Waymo, who runs a paid robotax service in some American cities, and Amazon’s Zoox.
Tesla is also supporting the standard practice of the new industry to rely on multiple technologies to read the road, using only cameras. This, Musk says, will be safe and much less expensive than lidar and radar systems added by rivals.
