A California-based company has come up with a smartphone that is almost entirely produced in the US, though it uses outdated parts and its technology cannot compete with the iPhone-and costs $ 2,000.
Liberty phone focused on intimacy from the beginning of purism technology has been collected, tested and packaged in the US, with its printed circuit (PCB) board also produced domestically.
Software development, including the Pureos operating system, is fully treated in the KBA the main presidency, which is the central circuit board that allows communication between all key ingredients, and the main circuit board modules are made within the country.
However, key components such as chassis, cameras, modem and WiFi/BT modules are derived from foreign suppliers, mainly in China and India. The screen and battery are imported from China while the camera is made in South Korea.
“I’ve worked on this for 10 years and we’ve done everything we can to build from American production,” Todd Weaver, founder and CEO of Purism, told Wall Street Journal.
The processor is done by a Dutch firm while the chip itself can be produced either in South Korea or elsewhere in Asia or Europe.
“There are only a few parts that do not yet have a chain of supply. We will continue to grow there until we get to that point.”
Weaver, whose assembly line consists of four people cheating phones along with hand, told the newspaper that purism is capable of producing Liberty phones at a rate of about 10,000 a month.
So far, he said his company, which was founded in 2014, has sold less than 100,000. Weaver told NBC News that Purism took six years from originally conceiving the phone as a vision to produce it and its sale.
By comparison, Apple Foxconn manufacturing partner is reportedly capable of producing up to 500,000 iPhones a day during peak periods – translates to 10,000 iPhones for every 12 minutes at maximum capacity.
Purism emphasizes its US -based production for critical security elements, while accepting the global nature of its supply chain.
While purism is unable to compete with behemoths technology on price and features, its main sales step is for security consumers who do not want their data collected from Apple and Google likes.
The Liberty phone runs Pureos, an open source operating system Linux. The device contains the hardware killing switches that physically distract the microphone, the camera, the Wi-Fi, the Bluetooth and the base band-virtually unheard of on the main smartphones.
But Pureos allows the user to engage only in rudimentary functions, such as calling, texting, browsing online and using basic applications such as a calculator, according to the diary.
Half of those who bought Liberty are US government employees who withdraw from the strictest characteristics of the phone’s security and intimacy, the newspaper reported.
“On the consumer side, they are security geeks, parents who want a phone for their child, older people or people who want to avoid great technology,” Weaver says. “Someone who needs a strong camera is not our audience.”
President Donald Trump has repeatedly pressured Apple and other major firms to relocate production to the US, threatening a 25% fee on iphone made overseas.
He has criticized the Apple COOK CEO for expanding production in India and insists that iPhones sold in the US must be built domestically.
While Apple has invested in American infrastructure and developing it, experts say the relocation of full iPhone production in America would be very conditional and logically complex.
Trump’s Trump family organization recently revealed its smartphone equipped with Android named T1.
Although the phone is traded as “made at the US, analysts believe it is likely to be produced by a Chinese manufacturer with minimal US involvement.
Business operates as a licensing agreement, with the Trump brand licensed to the T1 Mobile LLC, aiming at conservative consumers looking for alternatives to the American theme.
Apple usually sells tens of millions of iPhones each month, with accurate figures varying from trimester and market conditions. Based on the latest data, Apple sent approximately 151.3 million iPhones in the first nine months of 2024. This average at about 16.8 million iPhones per month during that period.
Google currently produces about 43,000-45,000 pixel smartphones in India, while its global shipments on average 766,000 units a month based on data from last year’s second quarter.
In comparison, Samsung produces about 20 million smartphones a month globally, with up to 5 million Galaxy S25 units produced per month of peak like January 2025.
Apple’s iPhone lining ranges from $ 599 for iPhone 16e to $ 1,399+ for iPhone 16 Pro Max, with models known as the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro at $ 799 and $ 999, respectively.
Google’s Pixel series starts at $ 499 per pixel 9a and climbs $ 1,799 for Pixel 9 Pro Fold, while Standard Pixel 9 and 9 Pro cost $ 799 and $ 999.
Samsung’s Galaxy S25 models start about $ 799, growing to $ 9999 – $ 1,099 for S25 Plus, and top with $ 1,299 – $ 1,419 per S25 ultra, depending on retailer.
While most of the iPhones are manufactured in China, Google Pixels are produced in Vietnam and China. Galaxy Samsung devices are mainly made in South Korea, Vietnam and India.
